Water is called "the universal solvent" because many, many substances can dissolve in it. However, there are some that can dissolve easier than others: salt and sugar are some of the quickest. Liquids and liquid chemicals also "dissolve" very easily in water, i.e. the combine with water molecules to create a solution. Hope this helped!!

What type of compounds can dissolve in water?

The general rule for solvation is like dissolves like. Water is a very polar molecule. Thus, water best dissolves polar substances, including ionic and polar covalent substances.

Why are lipids soluble in organic solvents like chloroform?

Fats, as well as organic compounds, are nonpolar substances. Water, however, is a polar substance. Nonpolar substances dissolve nonpolar substances and polar substances dissolve polar substances (like dissolves like) because each are more attracted to molecules of similar structure than of different structure.

Which type of solvent is best suited to dissolve non polar substances?

Carbon Tretrachloride

What type of compound will not dissolve in water?

A) nonpolar compounds will not dissolve in water because water is polar

Explain the phrase like dissolves like and give an example of two like substances?

In chemistry, the term like dissolves like refers to the fact that similar type solutes will dissolve in solvents that have a similar type of chemical composition. Substances like water, acetone, and alcohol are polar molecules and so are soluble in each other. Substances that form non-polar molecules like oil and gasoline are soluble in each other. However, oil will not dissolve in water because of their different chemical bonds.

What is the type of biochemical that does not dissolve in water?

Lipids Lipids

What are the two factors determine how easily water moves through a material?

Two Factors are the type of material. The best material water moves through is a partially permeable membrane. Another factor is the substances dissolved in the water and the substances inside the material. There can also be if there are pores that are connected.
