Explain fractional distillation and how it is used in refining oil?

Fractional distillation is a technique used to separate liquids with different boiling points. It is used in refining oil, whereby different types of oils are separated according to their different boiling points.

What is the difference between simple distillation and fractional distillation?

Simple distillation refers to the "simple" separation of a solid and a liquid by evaporating the liquid and collecting it after it passes through a condenser to be changed into a liquid state. Fractional distillation refers to the more complex way of separation, usually involving a liquid/liquid mixture (eg. ethanol and water). these can be separated since they both have different boiling points. When this mixture is heated the ethanol having the lowest boiling point boils off first, followed by the water. However the fractional coulomb condenses both gases back into liquid, and fall back in the flask, with time the ethanol gains enough energy to over come the fractional coulomb (this happen before the water does this since ethanol has a LOWER boiling point) and pass through the condenser, changes into a liquid and is collected.

What is a distillation disadvantage of fractional distillation?

One of the main sources of all types of energy is from sun.. The sources like fossil fuels, etc r gonna sure disappear some years later.. also its utilisation now also creates serious impact on life of human beings...u can c in many places were its temperature is hike... so installation of other devices for purification s a hard tiring process. so the better option s to use the available source for the purification process will be a good one. so its a advantage...

How is crude oil separated into different oils by fractional distillation?

Crude oil needs to be separate because as its crude oil at different boiling points burns and so it creates different types of elements, like for example gasoline at 600 degrees celsius

How is crude oil separated into several types of chemicals?

The oil is boiled into a fractional column. This is called Fractional Distillation. When oil is ready to be transferred into the different columns it is Condensed,Diesel, Petrol, Tar, Plastic, and Lubricating oil.

What is the boiling point of 70 percent ethanol?

The ethanol part of the mixture will boil at 78.4C, the rest of the substances will boil at their respective boiling points. This property provides the basis for fractional distillation, a method that can be used to refine crude oil into different types of products by heating the mixture to progressively higher boiling temperatures, then collecting and condensing vapor.

What is it called when you separate a mixture using a magnet?

Diffrent types of metal

What do you call the method of separating oil from water?

Distillation Distillation is a widely used method for separating oil from water To separate a mixture of liquids, the liquid can be heated to force components, which have different boiling points, into the gas phase. The gas is then condensed back into liquid form and collected. Repeating the process on the collected liquid to improve the purity of the product is called double distillation. Although the term is most commonly applied to liquids, the reverse process can be used to separate gases by liquefying components using changes in temperature and/or pressure. Distillation is used for many commercial processes, such as production of gasoline, distilled water, xylene, alcohol, paraffin, kerosene, and many other liquids. Types of distillation include simple distillation (described here), fractional distillation (different volatile 'fractions' are collected as they are produced), and destructive distillation (usually, a material is heated so that it decomposes into compounds for collection).

How crude oil is separated into fractions by fractional distillation?

Crude oil needs to be separate because as its crude oil at different boiling points burns and so it creates different types of elements, like for example gasoline at 600 degrees celsius

What types of substances are separated by distillation method?

A mixture of liquids with different boiling points like water and ethanol or crude oil which is a mixture of hydrocarbons. It can also be used to separate a solution into its solvent and solute, for example salt solution (salt water) could be separated into water (solvent) and salt (solute)
