When atoms bond together, they do so by sharing electrons. Additionally, when electrons gain energy, they move out farther from the nucleus of the atom. In some environments, there is extremely intense heat. Heat is a form of energy, and electrons can absorb this energy. So, electrons in the atoms become VERY excited and energetic. As a result, they move out very far away from the nucleus. So far, in fact, that they are really not part of the atom anymore. When this happens, we call the atom "ionized".

When any atom loses or gains electron(s), they become charged- either positive when it loses electron(s) OR negative when it gains electron(s). Those charged species are called IONS.

In an ionic bond, That is the only know way for atoms to become ions. An ionic bond is when electrons are moved from one atom to another, filling up the shell of one while emptying the other.

What is the best definition of radiation?

Ionizing radiation is radiation with enough energy so that during an interaction with an atom, it can remove tightly bound electrons from the orbit of an atom, causing the atom to become charged or ionized.

Can atoms be ionized by being excited?

No. When you excite an atom, you just do something with the electrons within the atom. (You take them into higher energy levels.) An atom can be ionized only when it is charged, you would have to remove or add an electron. But you are only placing the electron on higher energy level, so it stays within the atom, therefore atom is not ionized.

Does the helium atom hold an overall charge?

Not normally - but it can be ionized.

Are the number of protons and electrons equal in an atom?

If it is not ionized, then yes

Are Ions charged atoms or groups of atoms?

Either one. You can have an ionized atom or an ionized molecule. Many ionized molecules are radicals that had been part of a larger molecule and the event that separated them also ionized the radical. This is what free radicalsare.

Can atoms be ionized by changing the number of positive charges?

Ionizing is when you rip an electron away. so by taking an electron away, the atom is ionized
