I think you may be asking a question about cancer here although I am not sure. When a patient with a mystery illness is taken in to hospital for investigations they can have an X-ray say of their chest and when a doctor looks at the x-ray he/she sees an abnormality. It may be an area that is lighter or darker than the rest of the picture. The doctor may then say that this area is suspicious looking and could indicate a MASS usually meaning a growth or cancer, but not all growths are cancerous. Also, when the doctor feels a tummy of a poorly patient he may say that he can feel an unusual lump or MASS and they may then operate and explore. All cells in our body have a mechanism inside that says how fast they should multiply and replace themselves. Sometimes, this timing goes wrong and the cells start to multiply rapidly and will not stop. This can happen in the lungs, the stomach, the brain and even the skin, anywhere in fact. As the lump which starts off smaller than a grain of sand becomes bigger it starts to affect our normal body functions and that is when we go and see a doctor. A mass can be called benign, which means it does not invade or destroy surrounding tissue and can often be removed completely, or it can be described as malignant, which means it usually grows and destroys other tissue around it. It can also send its malignant cells or satalite cells to other parts of the body where the process starts all over again. Very early detection is the key to treating malignant cancer successfully.
