In 1878, Marc Delafontaine and Jacques-Louis Soret discovered the characteristic spectroscopic absorption lines of a new element they called Element X. Later that year, Per Teodor Cleve independently discovered Holmium through chemical separation techniques from the mineral erbia earth. The three are credited with the discovery of Holmium.

Holmium was discovered by Per Theodor Cleve ,who was a Swedish chemist. This element was discovered in the year of 1879. Per Theodor Cleve lived to be 65 years old from 1840 to 1905. He was a Swedish chemist who went to the Uppsala University. He got his P HD in 1863.He named the element after his birthplace, Stockholm, Sweden. He discovered the element on accident.
