the cadmium atom looses two electrons and its radius decreases because by taking away two electrons (negatively charged) it makes the nucleus positive with a positive 2 charge. since theres two less electrons the radius is smaller. hope i helped :D

When an atom becomes ionized, it gains or loses electrons (usually one).

When the number of electrons changes the atom becomes what?

When the number of electrons changes, the atom becomes an ion. An atom becomes a positively charged ion (cation) when it loses electrons and a negatively charged ion (anion) when it gains electrons.

The radius of a cadmium atom is smaller than the radium of a mercury atom. The trend for atomic radius is that the radius becomes larger toward the left side of the row and toward the bottom of the group.

How many protons are there in the nucleus of a cadmium atom?

Cadmium has an atomic number of 48, therefore it has 48 protons in the nucleus and 48 electrons in the neutral atom. When an atom gains or looses electrons what to the charge of atom?

When an atom gains electrons, it becomes negatively charged because it now has more electrons than protons. When an atom loses electrons, it becomes positively charged because it now has more protons than electrons.

What happens when the number of protons in an atom change?

When the number of protons in an atom changes, the identity of the element changes because the number of protons determines the element's atomic number. If the number of protons changes, the atom becomes a different element. This process is called nuclear fusion or fission.
