A formula unit shows the lowest ratio of ions that combine to make this compound. formula units don't exist alone, they are crystallized by the millions in solid ionic compounds, or when dissolved into water the formula units break up into ions in solution. You call the smallest bit of an ionic compound a formula unit. It's sort of like a "molecule of an ionic compound", but they are not molecules.

What does a formula tell you?

Chemical formulas are used to represent chemical compounds. It shows the component elements of the compound. Also it shows the ratios of the component elements.

What shows the components of a chemical compound?

A chemical formula shows the components of a chemical compound.

What are the symbols used for compounds called?

They are called "formulas" (Latin formulae) and show what elements and ions are in the compound. The formula H2O for water shows that a water molecule is made of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. The symbols representing chemical compounds are called chemical formulas. They can be expressed as an empirical formulawhich shows the simplest ratio of atoms in the compound, or a molecular formula which shows the actual number of each atom in the compound, or as a structural formula which shows the spatial relationship of the atoms.

What is the oxidation number for NH4NO3?

This is a ionic compound. nitrogen shows -3 and =5 in this compound.

The chemical equation that shows all ionic reactants and products is known as?

The chemical equation that shows all ionic reactants and products is known as the complete ionic equation. A molecular equation doesn't necessarily indicate ionic nature.

What is a symbol that shows the elements in a compound and the ratio of atoms?

You think probable to the chemical formula of a molecule.

Shows the ratio of elements in a compound?

The chemical formula of the compound shows the ratio of the atoms of elements in a compound. This must not be confused with the ratio of their masses.

What shows the ratio of how a compound is formed?

Its chemical formula.

What is the oxidation number of S in the compound Na2 SO4?

This is a ionic compound too. Sulfur shows +6 in sulfate ion.

Compare and contrast chemical and ionic equations?

Unbalanced equation is calles skeletal equation. The difference between these equations is that the skeleton equation doesnot show the no. of atoms and molecules in the equation whereas the balanced chemical equation shows. Also the balanced chemical equation shows that the products and the reactants are solid, liquid, gas or aqueous.
