There is a helpful phrase for remembering a few polyatomic ions.

consonants represent the number of Oxygens

Vowels represent the amount of extra electrons

NiCK- Nitrate = NO3 (-1 charge)

the

CaMeL- Carbonate CO3 (-2 charge)

ate

CLaM- Chlorate ClO3 (-1 charge)

and

BraN- Bromate BrO3 (-1 charge)

for

SuPPeR- Sulfate SO4 (-2 charge)

in

PHoeNiX- Phosphate PO4 (-3 charge)

*If the ending is -ite instead of -ate, this means the oxygen count goes down 1.

*For every hydrogen in front, the electron count goes down 1 (charge increases)

For example, Hydrogen Carbonite (or Bicarbonite) has the formula HCO2 (-1 charge)

Perchlorate= ClO4 (-1 charge) extra oxygen

Hypochlorite= ClO (-1 charge) loses 2 oxygens from base

Other polyatomic ions include:

Hydroxide- OH (-1 charge)

Ammonium- NH4 (+1 charge)

Acetate- C2H3O2 (-1 charge)

Cynide- CN (-1 charge)

Chromate- CrO4 (-2 charge)

Which of these is an example of a polyatomic cation?

The ammonium ion, NH4+, is the only polyatomic cation.

What is anion cation and polyatomic ion?

Well, a polyatomic may contain a cation in it. A cation is a positively charged ion. They are usually metals. A good way to remember is: "cats" have "paws" because they are "pawsitive". Cheesy, right? Anyways, an example of a polyatomic that contains a cation is NH4+. You know that this polyatomic has a cation by the +1 superscript. This + sign signifies a positive ion, which is called a cation!

Is ammonium an oxyanion?

No. An oxyanion is a polyatomic negative ion that contains oxygen. Ammonium is a cation (positive ion) and does not contain oxygen.

Is sodium chloride a polyatomic ion?

What is the definition of cations anions monatomic ions and polyatomic ions?

Cation: an atom who lost electrons.Anion: an atom who gain electrons.Monoatomic ion: ion formed from one element, as chloride Cl-.Polyatomic ion: ion formed from two or more elements, as (SO4)2-.

Is NH4NO3 Ammonium Nitrate a molecular or ionic substance?

It's an ionic substance. Well it's true that ionic substances are usually composed of a metal + a non-metal (or a polyatomic anion), but ionic substances can also be composed of a polyatomic cation + a non-metal (or a polyatomic anion). anion: negatively charged ion cation: positively charged ion

What is the full name of Mg2So4?

MgS2O3 is magnesium thiosulfate; It's a ternary compound, a metal bonded with a polyatomic ion. The metal has a fixed cation. List the cation-- magnesium-- and find the name of the polyatomic ion. S2O3 is thiosulfate, so the full name would be: Magnesium Thiosulfate.

Name the polyatomic ion SO42?

SO4-2The sulfate ion is a polyatomic ion made up of one sulfur atom and four oxygen atoms, that exists only if it can gain 2 electrons (from some metal cation or cations). It has a charge of -2. Note that this is the sulfate ion and not the sulfiteion.
