Oxygen is made from photo-synthesis and is emitted by plants that use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to extract carbon. Plants are made from carbon molecules, and sunlight falling on green leaves containing chlorophyll provides the energy to separate carbon from carbon dioxide.

ā 10y agoOxygen acts as the final electron acceptor at the end of the electron transport chain. It can act as the final acceptor due to its high electronegativity. Without this oxygen, the cell would have to run anaerobic respiration which would greatly reduce how much ATP the cell can make (by as much as 30-34 ATP).
