There term "mineral" in terms of nutrition means some inorganic substance (aside from water) that is essential to the body.

Many of these are elements mostly in the form of ions. These include sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, iron, and fluorine (listed as fluoride).

These and other substances are essential to human body function but can cause problems if too much is taken. For example too much sodium increases the risk of heart problems.

Most antacids contain some salt of calcium, magnesium, sodium or potassium and most dental products contain sodium and fluoride. Some people may want or need to limit their exposure to these substances.

Fluoride especially has been the subject of controversy in other uses as it can be toxic if swallowed.
