Fire requires three things: heat, fuel, and oxygen. If you take one of them away, then the fire will stop. By wrapping a heavy blanket around a burning object, it blocks oxygen in the air from getting to the fire and the fire goes out.

Fire is fueled by oxygen. Water contains oxygen also, although that is not the main reason why a blanket is used instead. A blanket is used to smother a fire so that it has no air to burn in. Without oxygen, the fire cannot burn and it is extinguished.

To cut the supply of oxygen from air and extinguish the fire. When clothes burn combustible compounds use oxygen from air to chemically combine with oxygen and release heat and light. We stop this oxygen supply to extinguish fire.

Why do you wrap blanket around a person whose cloths have caught fire?

Wrapping a blanket around a person whose clothes are on fire can help smother the flames by cutting off the oxygen supply. It is important to ensure the person stops, drops to the ground, and rolls to further extinguish the fire.
