It's because of the similarity in their polarity. acetone and ether have methyl groups which makes them non polar. and oil has long carbon chain which makes it non polar too. it makes acetone can soluble in both ether and oil. it's based on "like dissolves like" principle.

Acetone is a ketone, meaning there is a polar C=O bond between two R groups. This structure allows ketone to dissolve both polar (e.g. water and alcohol) and non-polar (fats and hydrocarbons like alkanes, alkenes).

The C=O bond provides polarity necessary for dissolving other polar molecules (water, alcohols) and the R groups (which are C chains) are non-polar, and can dissolve non-polar molecules (oils, hydrocarbons).

Does acetone have oil in it?

No.

Can acetone be used in recrystallization?

Yes. One method used allows dissolving your compound in a mix of acetone and toluene for instance. as the acetone evaporates, the mix becomes less polar and the compound recrystallises.

Does acetone dissolve crude oil like the sludge in the Gulf?

Crude oil has stuff like benzene, toluene, heptane and Octane in it. all those things are non-polar. polar and non-polar substances don't mix, like water (polar) and oil (non-polar). acetone is polar, but also non-polar due to its two methyl groups. So, yes. Acetone does dissolve crude oil.

Can acetone be used to remove oil?

No, acetone is not a solvent for oil. If motor oil or similar, use gasoline first, then Goof-Off to finish.
