∙ 13y agoAll batteries work by creating molecular changes to the 2 main compounds involved, when one or both are surrounded by a third compound. These chemical changes cause electrons to flow from one to the other when there's a path creating electricity. Zinc is just another element that a reaction can be generated from. Once there isn't enough of the right molecule to loose electrons the battery is dead.
Of the batteries I am aware of Zinc is the material that looses electrons to create the flow.

∙ 12y agoThey work, because if you put it in a fruit or juice (which contains acid) with another DIFFERENT metal.. it would go through the wire and light up a bulb or something...

∙ 13y agoZinc was the best of inexpensive metals at reacting with electrolytes to produce electricity. The metal 'Lithium' has become cheap enough these days to be utilized in even better power cells.
