Carbon dioxide (or CO2) is a key ingredient in most sodas (pops). It's what turns it from a "Kool-Aid" type drink to the bubbly beverage you are used to and where the term carbonated comes from. While I haven't heard of people adding more carbon dioxide to sodas, It could be added to "flat" sodas to bring back the bubbles. You'll also find it in beer, sparkling wine, Pop Rocks, fire extinguishers and more.

Why does sprite react when mentos are put in it?

When Mentos are added to Sprite, a rapid reaction occurs due to the rough surface of the candies, which provides numerous nucleation sites for carbon dioxide bubbles. As the carbon dioxide gas escapes from the liquid, it forms bubbles that quickly rise to the surface, causing an eruption of foam. The reaction is enhanced by the sugar and carbonation in Sprite, leading to an impressive geyser effect. This phenomenon is primarily a physical reaction rather than a chemical one.
