The energy to remove 1 electron is the first ionization energy. To remove a second electron requires more energy. This is because the electron being removed now has to overcome the +1 positive charge introduced after the 1st electron was removed.

Which has the larger sixth ionization energy Se or Br?

The first ionization energy is the energy that is required in order to remove the first electron from an atom in the GAS phase, the second ionization energy is the energy required to remove the second electron from an atom, etc. Ionization energy generally increases for every electron that is removed, and increases from left to right in the periodic table or if moving up the periods. In this case, from the periodic table (or according to Mastering Chemistry) Bromine (Br) has a larger sixth ionization energy than Selenium (Se).

Does sodium have the larger first ionization energy than potassium?

yes, it does

What do we mean by the first second and third ionization energies for a particular atom?

First ionization energy is the energy required to remove the first outermost electron from an atom. The second ionization energy is the energy required to remove the next available electron, and is greater than the first IE. The third IE is that energy needed to remove the third electron, and is greater the the second IE.

Which of these elements has the highest first ionization energy Si or C?

The ionization energy is the energy needed to extract an electron from an atom; first ionization energy, second, third etc. can be measured. Reactive chemical elements have lower ionization energy. The first ionization energy for silicon is 786,5 kJ/mol.The first ionization energy for carbon is 1 086,5 kJ/mol.

Which element's second ionization energy level is large compared to its first ionization energy?

Cl

Why does F have a larger first ionization energy than O?

First ionization energy increases as u move from left to right,so oxygen comes first than florine which means when u pass oxygen to florine the ionization energy become more than it was in oxygen.

What is the difference between 1st 2nd 3rd ionization energies?

The second ionization energy is always greater than the first because once you have pulled off the first electron, you are now trying to remove the second electron from a positively charge ion. Because of the electrostatic attraction between + and -, it is more difficult to pull an electron away from a positively charge ion than a neutral atom.

An atom has a first ionization energy of 496 kJmol and a second ionization energy of 4560 kJmol What group of the periodic table would the atom be in?
