When water changes its state from liquid to solid it expands and becomes more buoyant (Which means that it is more able to float). The ice incorporates air into the crystalline structure. It, therefore, becomes less dense and hence, it floats.

It's important to daily life because you have to know not to put too much water in a container you're going to freeze. If you do, it'll crack/break/explode. This can be very dangerous.
