there are two reasons why balloon framing has gone by the wayside. first and foremost is that it requires longer lengths of lumber [typically 22 ft] to accomplish this style of wall framing. also the resulting wall contains no fire blocking.in the event of a fire, flames typically race unimpeded through these cavities ,devouring the structure in no time at all.looking for a reason for its being, i suspect that in the era before modern insulation and vdr's, it was a way to create a ventilated space where warm moist could come in contact with dry cold and not result in problems.it is as if the air barrier would be defined as the plaster walls and the cavity would be dead air space.regards david castruccio
