The word diamond comes from the Greek word for unbreakable.
It is an allotrope or different form of carbon, is the hardest natural material and is the best known thermal (heat) conductor.
These are the properties that make it ideal for using as a drill head or industrial cutting and polishing tools.

About 80% of all diamonds mined are industrial diamonds: hard, useful and not gem-quality.

Industrial tools are often tipped with industrial diamond material, which increases the accuracy, usefulness, and hardness of the tool. For example, glass-cutting tools are tipped with diamond material, because diamond is the hardest natural mineral and its addition to the tip increases the precision of the tool.

Because it is very hard and although harder alternatives exist, they are massively more expensive. Diamond is made up of pure carbon atoms covalently bonded in a tetrahedral shape.

Titanium is very hard, harder then stainless steel. Most metal cutting bits need something that will allow the cutting edge to remain as sharpe as possible for as long as possible
