Why would you expect a C-C sigma bond formed by sp2-sp2 overlap to be stronger than a sigma bond formed by sp3-sp3 overlap?

because d c-c sigma bond formed by sp2-sp2 is formed from a double bond which is stronger than that of a single bond formed by sp3-sp3.
