In anodic system, small amounts of the metal migrates into the coating film limiting it's usefulness in corrosion protection. Anodic coatings are used in less severe environments and are generally economical and produce a nice surface finish.

Cathodic systems produce an coating free of metal migration and are much more robust. These systems are useful in heavy corrosive environments.
