This can be a benefit to naughty children, as they would then be unable to report back to North Pole headquarters and it's infamous dictator Santa Claus; although the act of intentionally robbing an elf of its magic is incredibly malicious and may be illegal in some countries.

Other elven creatures tend to be very high-strung and can become defensive, even violent, if approached by humans -- especially those of Nordic and Germanic descent.

Also it is important to note that, as intelligent creatures, elves would not be kept as pets. This is referred to as slavery.
