The plan that was spoiled and led to a shift in allegiance to the British refers to the American Revolutionary War, particularly the case of Benedict Arnold. Arnold, initially a key American general, became disillusioned with the Continental Congress and plotted to surrender the fort at West Point to the British. His treachery was uncovered in 1780, forcing him to flee to British-controlled territory, where he continued to serve the British forces.

It was Gen. Benedict Arnold who turned traitor in 1780. He was considered to be brilliant and dashing, but he also was ambitious, greedy, unscrupulous, and suffering from the idea that he wasn't appreciated. He plotted with the British to sell out West Point for 6300 sterling and an officer's commission. By accident the plot was found out and Arnold fled to the British.
John Mordaunt - British Army officer - died in 1780.
