Brian feels this way because he is stranded, all alone, and his mind is trying to get something as close to a person as it can .
EDIT:
I believe it is because it is one of the few things that he has seen in nature that is actually helping him survive in this difficult situation. (ie. It's keeping him warm, cooking the food he is able to find, etc.)
Hope this helps :D

In the book "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen, Brian's bear buddy helped him feel less lonely and provided comfort. The bear became a symbol of survival and companionship for Brian during his time alone in the wilderness.
Brian feels that the fire is his friend because it provides warmth, light, and a sense of comfort and security in the wilderness. It becomes an essential companion in his survival journey, helping him cook food, signal for rescue, and keep animals away. Over time, the fire becomes a symbol of hope and resilience for Brian.

There are a few reasons why one would feel weak beside one's friend. For example, the friend may lift more weight and thus making one feel insecure or weak.
