What are the best books for 8 yr old BOY?

It depends on what the kid likes; what does he like? Any cartoon books would be good though. If he is really into vampires, read the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan they're awesome, or even read him a varieties of the back of books and read it to him.

At this age, for most kids it's still a good idea to read stories with one a parent, who can explain the more difficult words/parts. This is also a factor in choosing appropriate books.

I would highly recommend the nine-volume graphic novel Bone by Jeff Smith, published by Scholastic. It has sold millions of copies and is excellent. It's a unique combination of humorous characters (a la Pogo or Calvin and Hobbes) in an epic-fantasy adventure a la The Lord of the Rings. Buy the first 1-2 volumes, if they enjoy it, they can pursue the rest. I've never met a kid who didn't love these.

The Tintin books are perennial favorites, especially with boys, although not comic books per se (they're bigger and longer.) Naruto is a popular manga, or Japanese comic, that 8-year-on on my block read. The Simpons comics are popular with 8 year olds. So are the Star Wars Clone Wars comics.

If you are specifically looking for superhero comics -- Superman, Batman, X-Men, Spider-Man, etc -- be careful about buying the "standard" comic books put out by DC and Marvel as they often cater to teen and adult tastes. Many comic books these days will include an age rating on the cover, but even then, do yourself a favor and flip-through the comic in question to ensure it's appropriate for the child in question.

The good news is that DC and Marvel both have separate lines of all-ages comic books specifically published for kids (published under the brands DC Kids and Marvel Adventures respectively). Comic book stores typically carry these in a separate kids section. Often, after 5 or 6 monthly issues are published, they will be collected into a bound book or digest: this is nice because stories are often serialized. This is where you'll find superhero stories where you don't need to worry about excessive language, violence, or sexuality.
