An old lady came to his (the beast's) castle on a stormy night. She offered the rose for a place to sleep for the night. He said no, she turned into and enchantress. She then turned him into a beast and every one in the castle into objects. He had to find someone who loved him before the last petal fell or else he would be stuck as the beast forever.
