The Elf on the Shelf loses his magic with any human touch. It doesn't matter if it's the touch of an adult, a child, or a baby. A human touch will cause him to use his magic.
Luckily, your parents can get a magic recovery kit from Santa if this happens. Really, the kid just consists of magic dust which looks a lot like red and green glitter. Your parent need to sprinkle the magic dust over the elf and wait overnight. That's all it should take for your elf to regain his magic. Your parents can look online to find magic dust or they can contact Santa directly.

When you buy your elf on the shelf, it comes with a book to read to your child. The elf on the shelf books and dolls are sold at large retailers like Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Macy's, etc. After you buy the elf, don't show it to your child, but instead read the book to him/her. The book tells the story of the elf on the shelf and talks about how he moves around your house and loses his magic if a child touches him. A good thing to do is to read your child the book before bed, and then have your elf make his first appearance the next morning when your child wakes up. Every year after that, you can choose when you would like your elf to start appearing around your house - usually anywhere from Thanksgiving to the first of December is a good time to introduce the elf on the shelf.
If you were talking about a real elf you would have to trick it to get on the shelf but if it were fake buy one and put it on the shelf
hopefully it keeps its magic
It will lose its magic and wont be able to fly to Santa
If you want to be really true the elf on the shelf is real but during the night when you are sleeping your parents move it so you can be suprised because a little stuffed puppet cannot have powers or magic so that means it does not take any touches to make it not have powers or magic the reason i know is because if you read closely in the book it says in order to move parents have to move it and because i do have a child that had one and it didn't move for 3 days but once i moved it it stayed there
