Kim is the first character of Seedfolks, and she actually starts the garden. Kim is a Vietnamese, nine-year-old girl who plants lima beans to prove to her father's spirit/herself that she is her father's daughter. She comes to the "garden" because it is the anniversary of her father's death, and she wants to be noticed by her father's spirit. Since she has participated in the garden, she has felt closer to her father.

In the book "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischman, the Romanian character is a man named Kim. He is a refugee who moves into the apartment building in Cleveland and starts a garden plot. Kim's gardening helps bring the diverse community together and creates a sense of connection among the residents.
In the story "Seedfolks," evidence that Kim and Ana lived in a poor neighborhood includes their living conditions in a run-down apartment building, the lack of resources and opportunities available to them, and their struggles with poverty and limited access to fresh food. Additionally, both Kim and Ana's personal stories highlight how poverty and its associated challenges impact their lives in various ways.
Seedfolks was created in 1997.
The characters are separating themselves by race.
