I think the most important one is the importance of speaking up. Or maybe gaining strength and the will to tell the truth and to not keep a tragic secret within youself cuz its only going to depress you and not solve your problems.

also .. to overcome your past. dont let things like getting raped keep your from going on in life.<--- that's easier said than done.

There is also the loneliness Melinda feels throughout most of the book. The person who was remotely a friend to her also ended up leaving her.
