The story is concerned with wisdom. In The Bible story, the Magi were coming on faith from a far place to give gifts to a child they did not have a clue where to find. The couple in the story gave a gift to each other with no idea what the other was planning. In each case, the gift was an act of faith that the recipient would be pleased with the gift.

This concept is coupled with the idea "never look a gift horse in the mouth", meaning to accept the gift with grace, not checking it to make sure it is perfect. Because after all, perfection is never attainable.
