He simply goes back to his work station where he finds a locked door. Little did he know that this room once contained the legendary box that was passed down from generation to generation. He then discovers that the box was long overdue to be opened (it unlocked itself many years ago), and that Lina has found it in her house. Lina finds it, but it gets chewed up by her baby sister, Poppy. Doon and Lina piece together the message, and discover it's the instructions for the way out of Ember. He wanders off to try and find the exit, and upon finding the raging torrents that would be their way out, he went back to find Lina so that they could escape together. Upon finding the staircase to the surface and escaping (Ember is an underground city), they wrap a message in Doon's jacket and drop it into the huge chasm that contains the city of Ember. The message - the completely deciphered code - is a message to all the citizens telling them how to escape for themselves. One of the ladies in Ember, named Mrs. Murdo, who was taking care of Lina and Poppy, finds the message at the end of the book, and it is discovered in the 2nd book, the People of Sparks, that Mrs. Murdo tells the mayor, but the mayor does not announce it. The mayor and his guards are then found in the Pipeworks trying to escape alone, but because the mayor is obese, the boat tips over and the mayor and his guards drown.

If a supervisor is 'telling you off' then you have done something not in accord with the rules. It is done so you know what is permitted and what is not.

The beeping is just telling you that the machine is turning off.
Telling them off isn't going to do anything but bring you DOWN to their level. You simple let them know you aren't ok with what they did, and YOU don't allow it to happen again. YOU can write them off.. or just remain guarded. But telling them off doesn't accomplish anything.
