Upon finding the staircase to the surface and escaping (Ember is an underground city), they wrap a message in Doon's jacket and drop it into the huge chasm that contains the city of Ember. The message - the completely deciphered code - is a message to all the citizens telling them how to escape for themselves. One of the ladies in Ember, named Mrs. Murdo, who was taking care of Lina and Poppy, finds the message at the end of the book, and it is discovered in the 2nd book, the People of Sparks, that Mrs. Murdo tells the mayor, but the mayor does not announce it. The mayor and his guards are then found in the Pipeworks trying to escape alone, but because the mayor is obese, the boat tips over and the mayor and his guards drown.
