It's possible the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel is so popular because it has all the good ingredients: a poor woodcutter, a horrible stepmother who gets what she deserves in the end, a cute cottage all made of candy and gingerbread, two sweet little children lost in the woods, and a wicked witch who means to cook the children until the brave youngsters shove her into her own oven, where she dies.

Hansel and Gretel steal the witch's gold and find their way home, where their dad (that's the woodcutter) tells them their evil stepmother is dead, and they all live happily ever after on the proceeds of the gold.
