It isn't as critical as to how close you excavate to building foundations. You want to be more careful not to excavate below a building's foundation. As a geotechnical engineer, we recommend that excavations for additions or appertenant structures not be extended within a 2 horizontal to 1 vertical oversize area extending down and away from the outside edge of the existing building's foundation.
