I've recently graduated with my BS in Civil &Environmental Eng and I can vouch that it has definitely tough to get a job now. I graduated with a 3.2 gpa, have had 2 internships while in school and worked for a contractor after I graduated only to be laid off shortly after due to budget restraints and a lack of business within the company. I even know of classmates who graduated a year before me and are still looking for jobs. This is not to say that it is a field that is not in demand, but as in any recession the first sectors to feel the economic effects are large scale developments and investments. When investors and municipalities don't invest civil engineers don't have work. However, the economy is bound to rebound out of this recession and once people gain confidence to make big investments we will be back in demand in the market. Also, It is a widely known fact within the industry that the infrastructure of our nation needs to be rebuild, since much of it was first constructed more than 50 years ago. I would say to just study whatever it is that interests you the most and your passion and motivation in that field will bring the jobs coming. Personally, I will be using this time off to go back to school and get my Masters.
