Believe it or not the popular slang term Guy for (man) may apply, they were originally called Man-ropes intended for manual carriage to the job site, perhaps, and then Guy=wire evolved. Might also have something to do with Guidon, a type of pennant used by the Cavalry and roughly meaning Guide-Man from the French Guide-Homme.There may be some rough connection with Gaffs as in ship rigging, also.

How long is a guy wire that reaches from the top of a 15-ft pole to a point on the ground 10 feet from the bottom of the pole?

The guy wire forms a right triangle with the pole and the ground. Using the Pythagorean theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2), we can calculate the length of the guy wire. In this case, a = 10 ft, b = 15 ft, so the length of the guy wire (c) is √(10^2 + 15^2) = √(100 + 225) = √325 ≈ 18.03 ft.
