The advent of the adhesive postage stamp officially began on May 6, 1840 with the release of the famous Penny Black.
The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp of a public postal system. It was issued by Great Britain and Ireland on 1 May 1840, for use from 6 May of that year.
Any signs of wear indicate coin circulation. Look at the year the penny was made, and compare the it with the wear. You can definitely tell if a penny has been used just by looking at it.

Postage stamps were first commonly available in Great Britain. The One Penny Black is considered the first stamp available for sale. They were printed in 1840. The following year the One Penny Red was issued, one of the earliest and fairly common stamps available.
Unfortunately, the Triple S Blue Stamp company is, like the snows of last year, gone.
The barrel code stamp will tell you, see related links.
You can use a magnifying glass to look closely at the numbers on the penny. Identify the numbers that indicate the year of minting. If the numbers are too rusted to read, gently clean the penny with a soft cloth or a mild cleaning solution to reveal the year.
