True, its worth whatever somebody will pay for it.
As a collector myself (including monopoly set, I would offer a max of $2 for it... maybe $10 if its in original condition (perfect).
Give me a specific year and type of monopoly set and I would consider offering up to $2000 for a particular set.
But i rarely buy outside my area except for rare books.
But on those I only buy from fellow major collectors (I own original Thomas Jefferson stuff ).
I own two particular early sets .. each of which are one-of-a-kind where they made only one each... One is worth $850 (appraised by them) and the other per various factors is worth more than $1800 (last appraisal was 2002).
