They both have equal amount of Pokemon, with a slight exclusive version Pokemon, the same story line, same TMs, and a few item differences involving the Mega Stones. Here are the Pokemon exclusive to only X: Xerneas, Charizard X, Staryu, Starmie, Pinsir, Mewtwo X, Houdour, Houndoom, Poochyena, Mightyena, Aron, Lairon, Aggron, Lileep, Cradily, Anorith, Armaldo, Sawk, Swirlix, Slurpuff, Clauncher, and Clawitzer. These are the Pokemon exclusive to Y: Yvetal, Charizard Y, Shellder, Cloyster, Omanyte, Omastar, Kabuto, Kabutops, Mewtwo Y, Heracross, Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar, Eletrike, Manetric, Purrloin, Liepard, Throh, Spritzee, Aromatisse, Skrelp, and Dragalge. If you found one of the versions that have your most favorite Pokemon, I would go for it.

I assume Pokemon Y is more popular, because some would say that Yveltal looks cooler than Xerneas. Although some of the Mega Evolutions in X look cooler than the ones in Y. It is just a matter of opinion.
