The English currency has been evolving for well over a thousand years.

The current British decimal currency consists of a Pound of 100 Pence and was introduced in 1971.

Decimal currency replaced the British Imperial currency consisting of Pounds, Shillings and Pence. There were 12 Pennies in a Shilling and 20 Shillings in a Pound. This now redundant currency had remained virtually the same since the Great Recoinage of 1816 when the British currency was modernised and standardised.

Prior to 1816, the Guinea was the major unit of currency and consisted of 21 Shillings, a Shilling consisting of 12 Pennies. The Guinea was replaced by the Sovereign.

Going back a further few hundred years, the names of the coins would be very unfamiliar to most and included Ryals, Angels and Nobles.

The one common coin throughout most of Englands various coinages is the Penny, which dates back to about the late 8th century AD and was most likely introduced by King Offa of Mercia.
