Briefly hinges are used to attach stamps to album pages. Hinges usually leave a mark on the back of the stamps. For a mint stamp, this disturbs the gum, which some collectors don't like. For a used stamp it really doesn't matter, as the stamp can be safely soaked and any remnants removed without affecting the value.

Collectors usually are will to pay more for stamps that are "never hinged", especially mint stamps.
