That depends on what you mean by "worth". Generally speaking, sterling flatware will be valued by maker/pattern/condition. There are brokers and resellers who specialize in sterling and sales to them would normally result in a price to you of 1/4 to 1/2 the price they'd sell it as they'd list it as "used" or estate silver. Inscriptions or initial stamps will lessen the value. The absolute minimum value would be the value of the silver itself, you'd weigh the silver parts, and then multiply by .925 to get the weight in actual silver. You then multiply that weight in ounces by the price of silver in ounces to get the silver value of the set. Kitco.com has the quotes for silver prices on a pretty much constant basis. Note that if you are selling for scrap, you'll do well to get 3/4 of the precious metal value of the total. The best price to you would probably be obtained by selling it yourself on one of the auction or sales websites, setting that minimum of 1/2 the price set by one of the estate silver dealers.

How does one determine if a piece is sterling silver?

To tell if something is real sterling silver there can be a sterling stamp placed on the actual item, since it is illegal to place that stamp if it is not real. There is also an old trick, which may or may not be real, that claims if you rub it against hair, and it smells like metal it is not real.

Did they ever place diamonds or precious stones in a sterling silver setting?

Sure. In the past people would not see diamonds set in silver or turquoise in gold. Now you see both, though not very common. Turquoise has been found in silver in the South West, thus associated with silver. Sterling Silver is a bit soft for setting diamonds, thus the setting either has to have some gold in it, or copper or be very heavy ( the prongs) of something to make up for the softness of the sterling. Thus the exact same style that you see done in gold could not be done in sterling . That does not exclude the combination though

Is 925 sterling silver from China true sterling?

Hi,you can check your `sterling silver` jewellery from China with these easy tricks:You may test it with nitric acid. In an inconspicuous place on the item, lightly scratch or scuff a small spot and apply a tiny drop of nitric acid to the spot. Silver plated brass, nickel silver or low quality silver alloys will turn green when a drop of nitric acid is applied because of the high copper content. Sterling will turn a creamy color. If it turns black, it is coin silver. When testing items you suspect may be silver plated, use a small file to cut through any plating or lacquer in a discreet area on the item. If you see a gold color, you can assume it is brass that has been silver plated.Another test is to use a magnet. Sterling silver will not stick to a magnet, but just because the piece does not stick does not mean that it is sterling silver. Therefore, use this only as a secondary test.

How do you weight sterling silver?

To measure the weight of sterling silver, you typically use a scale that is calibrated for precise measurements of precious metals. Place the sterling silver item on the scale and record the weight in either grams or ounces, depending on your preference or the unit commonly used for silver measurements. Remember to subtract any weight of packaging or materials that are not part of the sterling silver item.
