The accuracy of a Colt Model 49 or 51 would be comparable to most modern revolvers of similar size. Prior to 1850's, the single-shot, flintlock pistols did not have a sight on them. The military pistol used in the American Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars was a large .69 caliber with a short barrel. The guns usually had a brass knob on the bottom of the grip---which came in handy if you missed on your shot. The first Colt Revolvers also did not have a sight on them. Later ones, Model 1851, had a front sight that consisted of a short stud on top of the tip of the barrel. The rear sight was a V notch cut into the Hammer. So when you pulled the hammer back to cocked position, you could align the sights. Of course, if the hammer was loose or a little off-center, then the accuracy was off. I once owned a replica 1851 Colt with a shorter 5-1/2 inch barrel. If I used the sights to aim at a bullseye, it would miss by 6 to 8 inches to one side at a mere 15 paces. My longer barrel Model 1861 was more accurate but there was no way to adjust the front or rear sight except by a gunsmith. Remington revolvers, used by Army up to Custer's Last Stand, had a sight cut into the strap that was above the cylinder. This should have provided more sturdy sight for this pistol. The fiirst people who began to shoot replica black powder revolvers, would buy a replica Remington and have a gunsmith mount modern sights that were adjustable in the field. This greatly improved the accuracy as the sight picture was more precise and could be adjusted for bullet drop or inaccuracies of the barrel bore. It wasn't until the 1970's, Ruger made the first modern black powder revolver of a new design. The Ruger "Old Army" BP pistol was built along the design of the Remingon revolvers and used the grip frame based on their Ruger Black Hawk design. It included a fully adjustable rear sight that shoots a nice group at 50 ft. In the wild West, many gun fighters filed off the sight as they fought at close range.

A 1850 black powder .44 caliber pistol typically has an effective range of about 50 to 100 yards, depending on the shooter's skill and the specific pistol's design.
