There were two types of British fourpence (or groats as they were often called) minted in 1840, the first and more rare version is the Maundy fourpence, these coins were given out by Queen Victoria in a special ceremony on Maundy Thursday to people, although collectors could buy them at banks. They were not intended for circulation and as such are common in high grades. These can be identified by having a large number 4 on the reverse surrounded by a wreath. In decent condition they can be worth anywhere from $15-25+

The second, and most common type is known as the Britannia groat and it was a circulation issue coin. This features Britannia on the reverse and the words "Four Pence" above. In average circulated condition it runs about $5-20 depending on condition and can be worth more than $20 in better grade.
