It originally sold (via television commercials) for $17.50 for two pieces, which were mailed each month. After 16 months the set would be complete, and the board was included. Total original cost: $280. === === According to a subscription application from the National Historical Society c/o: The Franklin Mint, the subscriber agreed to pay $17.50 per month and would receive two pieces every OTHER month making the value of the set at (17.5 x 32) $560.00 - not $280. As to the actual value of the set, the market will determine the price. A number of these sets have come and gone (with and without takers) at eBay and other online auction houses or sellers. The asking price is generally a bit over $300 and the best offers usually edge up over $200 or so. The condition of the set is important, as you might have guessed.

One set went for auction in June 2008 for £20-30 per this ad: The Waterloo Museum "Battle of Waterloo Chess Set" by Franklin Mint, with boxed set of identification leaflets. Figures are excellent to near mint, board has a few minor chips to edges.
Other then the silver value, there is no collectors value on Franklin Mint items
what is the value of an 1886 The Franklin Mint Watch
the only value of Franklin Mint items is the silver value. There is no collectors value for Franklin Mint items. Years ago I had a Franklin Mint gold clad coin group. I was told that the Franklin Mint buy them back any time. They neglect to tell you the items must be in mint shape, untouched and they must have a buyer for your items. Otherwise, the mint does NOT buy items back.
