Many of the Patriot soldiers did not have a uniform, as the British soldiers did. This is because the Patriots were a militia, made up of men from the colonies who were usually farmers, millers, blacksmiths, and other tradesmen.
The British Empire became so powerful because of cunning tactics, like setting up a small trading colony in India (east India company) and gradually growing until they end up in control. Not all of there colonies where gained though cunning tactics though, After WW1 in the Treaty of Versailles all German colonies were handed to Britain as a punishment for Germany. But conflict was used before WW1 as well like when the British fought the French for control of Canada, the British won.

The Grey cadet uniforms were developed when General Scott defeated abritish army in Canada in 1815. In honor of this win the USMA adopted this uniform. It is believed that the British believed that the uniforms meant they were just common militia but when they ended up winning the british were shocked.
The British Royal Navy built the first boat to launch self-propelled torpedoes in 1877. They followed up with new designs right up till WW1 and on. The Italian Navy also built many early torpedo boats and used them to great effect in WW1.
