In the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, one of the fairies at a princess' christening is offended by the lack of respect shown to her and attempts to kill the child. The child doesn't die, but instead falls into an almost eternal sleep. In the Disney film, the fairy is given the name Maleficent.
