Who was Douglas Bader?

Douglas Bader was a pilot who lost both his legs in a flying accident in the 1930's. He taught himself to walk again with artificial legs and when World War 2 started, he managed to persuade the Royal Air Force to let him fly again. His story was told in the 1950's film 'Reach for the Sky'.

Sir Douglas Bader was a WW2 Ace, his father died due to fighting in WW1. Bader had both his legs amputated after trying to peform stunts in a bulldog, which was to heavy. He taght himself how to walk and fly, after being told by doctors he would never walk again and afterwards he joined back up with the RAF. He killed 28 men and sadly was caught by a German soldier after he crashed into another plane. He was set free at the end of WW2 when Germany lost the war. he lived until he was about 70 years old and died from a heart atack.

He was a famed double amputee from an air crash (one leg below knee, one above knee), who became an ace fighter pilot, strategist and wing commander in the Royal Air Force in WWII.

He was a superior pilot in part because he could pull more Gs and remain conscious, with less extremity for blood to sink into.

He developed "beehive" tactics to ensure maximum survival of bombers, while inflicting maximum damage on German interceptors. A small bomber squadron would be surrounded by entire wings of fighters.
