I think an Indian can be knighted only after an honorary UK citizen has been conferred to him. Otherwise, only nationals from Australia, NewZealand and West Indies can be knighted. Other nationals can be conferred KBE (Knighted of British Empire) which can be used as a Suffix and not as a prefix as Sir.
