One of the most significant choices that people will ever have to make is choosing where to go to college. Since there are hundreds of colleges to choose from, most people will want to use some resources when narrowing down their lists. One of the most popular resources is the US News College Rankings, which come out annually. Using this as a resource provides a few different advantages to a prospective student. One key advantage to using the US News College Rankings is that it will give an immediate list of the top colleges. The rankings will rank about the top 200 undergraduate programs in the country. For each of the schools, US News will give a separate rating on a few different factors, which include quality of professors, cost, future income, campus lifestyle, and an overall rating. Students can then filter and search by what factors they consider most important. Another advantage of using the US News College Rankings to search for potential schools is that the rankings will provide detailed information on the school. Students can quickly learn about the faculty and what requirements, such as ACT, SAT, and GPA, are needed to get into the school. From the rankings students can also get information about application deadlines and how they can go about applying for school as well as their financial aid programs. While US News College Rankings does provide some clear advantages, students do need to keep an open mind when reading the report as there are some flaws to the statistics. One clear flaw is that the primary driver for the rankings is post-college salary. While this may show that a student could earn more money by attending one school, it does not factor in whether students at the school tend to choose majors, such as education, which offer lower potential for immediate earnings. Another disadvantage is that many schools are completely overlooked. Some schools with smaller enrollments are completely excluded. These schools could provide an excellent education and personal foundation, but they are often avoided by students because they are not in the rankings.
