In year 1940, 1 year after the creation of Batman and some 5-3 years after the creation of Superman, comic books were really popular. But in 1966, comics became REALLY popular, after the success of Adam West, Burt Ward and Alan Napier's roles as Batman, Robin and Alfred in the TV show "Batman", people liked superheroes and began buying many comics, making DC, Marvel, Image and Dark Horse rich.

The 1840s hardcover illustrated collection of Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck from Switzerland has a fair claim to being the original incarnation of the comic book or graphic novel. This book, published in the U.S., collected what are widely regarded as the very first version of the comic strip (which went by the same name, starting in the 1830s), consisting of side-by-side drawn panels with text below each panel (instead of text in the drawing itself, as in later comic strips and comic books).

Although I note this was published in 1837, Yves Granger's answer rightly notes it was originally WRITTEN in rightly notes it was originally WRITTEN in 1827 (and the question asks about he written-on date of the first comic book/strip, not first publication date).

Comics gained popularity in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s with the introduction of superhero comic books, most notably Superman in 1938. This era is often referred to as the Golden Age of comics.
