If you have to do it manually, first determine whether it is serif or sans serif, and script, block, etc. Take note of the ascenders and descenders of letters like b, d, q, p, etc. Look and see if any characters appear more decorative than others. Also take note of the appearance of the lowercase a. Then go to a website that has samples of all these fonts and sort through the list accordingly - serif or sans serif, etc. Or use your computer's font library. It really helps if you are familiar with the popular fonts to notice the differences, otherwise this route will take you a really long time to compare each one.
